The chart pictured below depicts which controllers will be able to play each system's games. The best all-round pad is the Gamecube's, but due to the awkward position of its +pad it's probably worth picking up a classic controller if you want to play SNES or older games.
Note that this chart is NOT implying the Wiimote is optional for Wii games. It's saying in games which have a more traditional control scheme other pads can be used.

The big and last question has been answered, now only one more week until the Wii goodness!

Of course gamecube controllers work on Wii, it's for traditional control games, e.g SMASH BROS. Developers can also include the option of standard controls.

Well, I like the Classic Controller. It's like the old controllers, which I love. Would work great with Genesis.

The cube controller works for everything? Sweet!

Does this mean that you can use a regular gamecube controller for every game on the Wii? Or only certain games?

That's awesome the gc controller ftw then I can vs my bro.

Actually, the GCN controller will only be functional in some games, such as Super Smash Bros Brawl. Actually, as of yet, SSBB is the only game currently known to function with GCN controllers.

The classic controller also suckers in ps2 zealots with its ps style analog placing. CLEVER Nintendo.

Would have liked classic controller for gc, could have saved me a bit of money. Oh well.

Why would you want to use a gamecube controller for Wii games? It wouldn't be near as fun for any of the Wii games. Neither would the classic controller.

No "real" need for the classic controller but Super Metroid will play better with it, it's much like a snes controller.

Does the new Wii controller work with N64 games? Does not look like it on the chart. Want to buy the steering wheel controllers and play mario kart 64 with the new steering wheels. Is this possible?
