It's been revealed by a spokesman that Big N's new handheld, the DSi, will have some restrictions when it comes to region locking. General DS games will continue to be region-free, but titles specific to the DSi will have locks in place.
"DSi embeds net communication functionality within itself and we are intending to provide net services specifically tailored for individual regions. DSi is region locked".
"Also because we're including parental control functionality for Nintendo DSi and each region has its own age limit set by different independent bodies".
Does this sway your opinion on the DSi at all?

Wii's World is not officially affiliated with Nintendo! (but they wish we were).

I still play my GBA games so I'm definitely not getting the DSi. DSi will most likely marginalize the DS market because of it's exclusive hardware features. Nintendo has a history of supporting its handheld legacy games, but in this case they're not looking back.

Pfft, no. This doesn't change my opinion one bit.

Depends on what games they release which will be DSi only.

I don't care, I'm perfectly happy with my 2004 DS model.
Monkeylemur said:
Not really. Easy solution: keep our old DS/lite and buy DSi, too.

It seems the DSI is a portable Wii. Can you put your VC games from the Wii to your DSi?

I'll still have my old DS so if I really wanted to import something, I still can. I didn't know about DSi exclusives though. Interesting.

Could someone please elaborate what region-locked means because this article means nothing to me unless I know whta it is saying, and I am thinking of buying a DSi.

Sways my opinion a little bit. I'm already ticked, but they're kind of breaking their own rules they've unofficially set yet another time now. Generally Nintendo only has two models of a handheld per generation; Every Nintendo handheld since the Gameboy Color has had SOME form of backwards compatibility; and they generally didn't region lock, except for the Famicom, but I think it was pretty obvious as to why right there. In short, I'm not impressed in the least.

For AlbinoJedi, region locking means you can't play games from other regions, if you bought a DS game in Europe you can't play it on your North American DS. At least that's what it used to mean.

Nope. No swaying whatsoever.

I know what Nintendo means when they say DSi only games are region-locked. Since DSi only games had internet features and communication support on a specific region. I believe they might prevent any region specific content like say blood, nudity, violence in its games from being shown elsewhere, remember different regions have different laws about these kind of contents. Some content in the US game might not be accepted in other country and vice versa.
