Nintendo president, Reggie Fils-Aime (aka the Reggienator) has spoken out about the "used games" market, which is currently gaining popularity at retail stores.
"We have products that consumers want to hold onto. They want to play all the levels of a Zelda game. A game like Personal Trainer Cooking has a long life. We believe used games aren't in the consumer's best interest".
"Describe another form of entertainment that has a vibrant used goods market. Used books have never taken off. You don't see businesses selling used music CDs or used DVDs. Why? The consumer likes having a brand new experience and reliving it over and over again. If you create the right type of experience, that also happens in video games. The one retailer that has a substantial business in this has figured out a way to handle it in a way that is effective for the consumer. That's tough for other retailers experimenting with this, in part because their employees don't have the expertise in this market".
Reggie's stance is an obvious one, since Big N doesn't make any money from titles that get resold. What's your take on used games?

Pretty good. I've only bought one game used before, and that was ac:cf, because 1) They were out of new ones at the store. 2) It was 5 bucks cheaper. It was still in perfect condition, so I said what the heck.

Well, if it's not in a gamestop/gamecrazy, then pawn shops are going to make BANK.

I don't have enough money to be paying $50 to play every good game, so I love used game stores. Sadly, there aren't many of those around here in Mexico.

Although the Reggienator is awesome, I highly disagree. Used games can give you the opportunity to experience games you might not be sure if you will like. I would play three times as many games if I could afford to, but unfortunately new games can become expensive quick. And also, people do buy used Cds and Dvds. I buy used cds and dvds at all the same stores I get used games.

The only used games that I buy are out-of-production titles for the NES, or occasionally the SNES. When it comes to Wii games I'd rather buy new because you can either 1) wait until a title matures and its price drops, or 2) suck it up and stop complaining. I don't know, I've just never been into used games. Their cases are scratched up, their discs occasionally don't play 100% correctly, and they usually have damaged or missing software manuals.

I love waiting til' the price is cheap, but that takes forever with new games. All of my GameCube collection and DS collection I bought used and most of these games are top notch.

No duh people in the video game industry hate the used game market. But since Gamestop is also their biggest retail ally, they usually don't do anything about it, seeing as Gamestop probably won't change their ways anytime soon.

Used games are good if you know what you are buying, I always look at my games before purchase. If the disc is scratched or the case is in bad shape etc I do not buy. Most people today are affected by our bad economy and cannot afford to buy new games which are way overpriced. I have Wii 360 and ps3 so keeping up is a pain, gamefly takes care of all that.

I sympathize with Mr. Fils-Aime but many of the older games are almost impossible to find new. The one used game I remember buying was Shadowgate for the old NES, an absolute classic. Nonetheless, if Nintendo wants to reduce sales of used games, they need to encourage developers to increase replay value.

He's basically saying that Gamestop sucks, and seriously- they do. Game developers and publishers don't make as much money as they could, they don't get as much coverage for their costs since Gamestop makes it, and games end up being rushed and end up with lower quality. Gamestop is milking both the game industry and the game consumer. Milking them dry. I will never turn in a used game to gamestop.

Well this explains one thing for sure, if gaming companies aren't making any money for used games then anybody who buys them shouldn't get upset or complain about how slowly Nintendo is creating new games since they won't get any money if you buy a used game.

I only get used games if I'm skeptical about a game. I usually buy an absolutely new game if I know it's going to rock forever. Well, most of the time.

Just delete the files that are already there and it's a brand new game! Who cares if you know someone's already played it before you? They are games. Games are played. By people. No big deal.
