He was probably talking about for actual Wii games. This news is just saying the Wavebird can be used for playing Gamecube titles on the Wii.

What I am really wondering is if my retro controller will work with the virtual console. If it did, I think that would be better even than Nintendo's retro controller. Mine is a pelican version of a Gamecube controller that has no c-stick or the like, and looks almost identical to a SNES controller. I suppose it would work if the Gamecube controller worked with virtual console games.
