3DS Homebrew Channel Delayed

3DS Homebrew Channel Delayed

New 3DS cited as main reason for delay

Two weeks ago we reported that a 3DS homebrew channel was in the final stages of development and a release would be imminent. The programmer behind the channel, Smealum, stated that it would not run 3DS ROMS. However, it was planned to support homebrew games and apps. The future plan for the app was to essentially make the 3DS region-free, allowing players to play games from any region on the system.

Well... that's all been put on the backburner. The recent announcement of the New 3DS models has led to the postponement of the channel. The New 3DS release date in Japan is set for October 11th, and Smealum has stated that he needs to assess what the new system throws up; he did state that there are "no plans to delay into 2015."

While I'm disappointed in the channel's delay, I understand Smealum's reasoning. By waiting, he can test the updated models, before releasing the channel, thus allowing him to ensure the new system won't lock out the homebrew channel.

All we can do now is wait and see.
